Mary C. Snow was born in Charleston, West Virginia on September 15, 1913. She was a brilliant student and was graduated from West Virginia State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in French and English at the age of just 19. She also earned Master’s Degrees in Elementary Education and Child Psychology from the University of Cincinnati and went on to do additional studies at West Virginia University, Marshall University and the University of Cardiff in Wales.Mary was the first Black principal of an integrated school in Kanawha County and the first African American to be sent to Cardiff, Wales from Kanawha County as a teacher. While in Great Britain, she was one of ten outstanding exchange teachers to have “High Tea” with Queen Elizabeth. Some of Mary’s accomplishments include service as a commissioner on the West Virginia Human Rights Commission, recipient of the governor’s “Living The Dream Award”, the Gregory Loebach Award for Support of Education, Woman of the Year by the American Biographical Institute, YWCA Woman of Achievement Award, past president of the Kanawha County Retired Teachers Association, Editor of the West Virginia State College newspaper, contributor to the Pittsburgh Courier, listed in the Garnet Hall of Fame, president of Delta Sigma Theta Charleston/Institute Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma and Epsilon Chapter of Phi-Delta-Kappa and many other awards. She was the principal of Glenwood Elementary School for over thirty years. At the age of ninety-two, Mary C. Snow was still being used as a substitute teacher in the Kanawha County School system. She died on January 21, 2011.
